Staffordshire Historic Churches Trust

For those who wish to encapsulate in their imagination all that is truly English the vision of an ancient church with tower or spire in rolling countryside usually springs to mind. The church is often right at the heart of the village, town and other urban development.

Within Staffordshire, a county so often associated with industry, there is a wealth of beauty. Cannock Chase, the Vale of the Trent, the moorland areas in the North of the County are but three of many areas of glorious countryside. Within

these areas, as well as in the industrial regions, are wonderful examples of Church Architecture - a phenomenon which is uniquely English. Staffordshire possesses many fine churches. These buildings are not only mysterious and beautiful, but reflect the history and architecture of many centuries.

The significance which historic churches has for people of all religions (and even for those with no religious beliefs) is something that is a constant source of surprise and difficult to explain. Ancient churches have a diverse attraction and meaning to different people.

The Staffordshire Historic Trust exists to foster interest in, and support the preservation of, historic religious buildings in Staffordshire. It does this by organising talks, lectures and presentations of interest to its members and others, arranging concerts and other social activities, participating in a national fundraising Cycle Ride and Walk and coordinating an open garden scheme in support of local churches and the objects of the Trust.

Many of the churches pictured on this website have benefitted from grants from the Trust.
